To pass TAS 201 Large Missile testing, a full-scale prototype door is mounted in an accredited testing chamber. A calibrated air cannon fires a 9-pound solid Southern Yellow Pine 2x4 timber missile measuring 8 feet in length at an exact velocity of 50 feet per second (34 MPH) directly into the center of the door panel and into its locking perimeter hardware. The door must withstand this direct impact without allowing any penetration or tear greater than 1/16" x 5".
9,000 Positive and Negative Pressure Cycles
Immediately following the missile impact, the exact same shattered test unit is subjected to Protocol TAS 203 cyclic pressure testing. An oscillating vacuum turbine applies 4,500 positive pressure cycles followed by 4,500 negative pressure cycles (totaling 9,000 cycles) at up to 1.3 times the maximum design pressure. The door leaf, hinges, and lock bolts must remain fully locked and anchored to the test buck throughout the entire test.
